Jeff Kocsis interview

It's been nothing but good times traveling with Jeff over the past year. He's laid back, always positive, and when its time to ride, he's nothing short of smooth, consistent, and just an all around treat to watch.

Jeff's coming back to Florida here in the next couple weeks to take a break from the Jersey winter. I'm looking forward to the weekend sessions that are going to go down--leaving off from the last time we rode here in the city two years ago. Back at the end of '08, I was excited to get news that we had room for an addition on the Madera "Pro" team for this year - we all agreed that Jeff would fill the spot naturally. Welcome aboard!

1.What is the absolute best thing about Jersey?

Being close to NYC and having every highway run through my town. Being close to it all.

2.What is the absolute worst thing?

Traffic gets annoying sometimes and the pot holes in the roads. Horrible!!!!

3.What immediately comes to mind when you think of autumn in the N.E.? Is it a good feeling, or is it a bummer?

I love autumn over here. It's perfect man. I almost forget sometimes what comes after it.

4.And Winter? How do you deal?

Winter's beat, but it gives me time to spend with my girl and work alot so I can take off in summers n such. You're forced to stay inside the house. Sometimes that's the best thing ever and other times its the worst.

5.What's the one place you'd move to given the chance?

I'd move to Spain or somewhere with a relaxing feel.

6.Tell us a little about this German delight? How did you get ahold of that car?

A friend from the forums had it. He lives in central Jersey and he just called me one day n said he wanted to sell it-he had just bought a house. It's got a 3.2 liter m3 motor in it. It's a little muscle car pretty much. German style. I just like the car because it has a hatch and they stopped making them in 99 in the usa. So it's rare and a classic. A BMW compact!!! Best combo.

7.You've been tooling with it for a bit right, jacking it up with speed steroids?

It's got tons of work done to it, but as I'm owning it, I am slowly adding more to her. I pretty much just worked with my dad for like 4 months straight n sold some stuff online.

8.When we were on the Madera trip to Milwaukee, we talked about your laid back riding schedule. It seems that you get more inspiration to ride by not riding? Tell me a little about this?

Well, I work with my old man and have a g/f so large parts of my weekdays are taken up. But it feels good when I just do my own thing and then hop on the bike on a Sunday with some close friends n just go mess around. Not being on the bike everyday makes me appreciate it more.

9.I couldn't agree more. The more I'm away from riding, the more I want to ride. What kind of work do you do with your dad?

I do electrical and in-home remodeling with my dad. Paint, sheetrock, bathrooms, kitchens, molding, and plumbing. Pretty much anything you can think of. Sometimes it's real good because I learn alot and it helps me get ready for my own house one day. Home owners have no idea how much you really need to know and you can save thousands of dollars doing the work yourself.

10.Is this something you plan on doing as future income?

I haven't decided yet, sometimes when I'm working I just feel like going home and sleeping till the work week is over. I might go back to school sometime and try to get a job with health coverage and a stable income. 2 things that this work does not cover.

11.In your video sections, it always seems that Northern New Jersey has a cache of small jibs created through old architecture...how do you go about finding spots are do they just pop up when not riding (driving around)? Are these in neighborhoods or more in the industrial areas?

North Jersey is known for its industrial side streets and random old playgrounds. They are hidden in every little town around me. You really have to take your time and just drive down EVERY single street. Some stuff is right on main roads but most of the spots that I ride I try to find and hold down. I'm sure there's a lot more I haven't even seen yet that's 10 minutes from my house.

12. I guess that's one aspect of street riding that's unbeatable--finding unique little treasure troves deep in the cut. Got a good story about finding something unique? Is there a favorite spot that you have found recently?

That roof spot in my Madera part was found like 2 months before we shot those clips. I always saw them passing by and more stuff just kept showing up around the corner. That place is 5 minutes from my house, I've been riding for 7 or so years and never came across it until then. I've been brought into city hall for questioning just b/c I looked too sketchy when I was lurking around these factories. They thought I was planning a set up or something.

13. What happened after the questioning at city hall?

I know the guys who run the rec. department because we have a lil skatepark in town. Once they saw me they said I was good to go.

14.How are you dealing with the remainder of winter? Travelling soon?

I am trying to come down to Florida soon!!! I've just been riding the animal warehouse in the meantime.
